ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting new opportunity to join our Project Delivery & Construction team as a Construction Manager. This position can be located in one of our Canadian offices.
This is an integral role position within our organization where you'll provide active leadership, support and guidance to our Project and Construction teams and ensure projects are delivered using best industry practices. The Construction Manager will report directly to the Vice President, Construction, and is responsible to lead one or more project teams to ensure all aspects of project planning and execution meet the established requirements with respect to cost, schedule, scope, quality, health, safety, and environment. In addition, they are a key stakeholder in managing accurate, and timely detail to the Company’s renewable energy and T&D construction business, and in providing guidance across a portfolio of large-scale renewable energy construction projects ($100M+).
Your expertise is integral across the project life cycle, as well as your collaborative work with Lead Developers, Project Managers, and Supply Chain partners to deliver predictable project outcomes and successful project execution.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
As the Construction Manager, you are accountable for the successful project execution throughout the full PDL lifecycle. You acumen and ability in utilizing a construction driven approach whereby project planning begins early in a project's lifecycle is critical in the implementation of the thorough construction plan and key in successful execution and eventual handover to the operations team
This position is based at one of our Canadian offices, but the core role responsibilities will be at the jobsite. Mobility to follow projects to the jobsite and lead construction and commissioning activities is required.
This is a full-time salaried position and is also considered a safety sensitive role. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
ACCOUNTABILITIES / RESPONSIBILTIES
As the Construction Manager, you will:
- Single accountability for planning, orchestrating, and delivering projects within the framework of TransAlta’s strategy including the leadership of large-scale, complex projects often involving multiple internal and external team members, stakeholders, customers, and partners
- Deliver top performance in all project aspects including Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS), cost, schedule, functionality, performance, and reliability). In particular, the EHS focus shall include:
- Achievement of EHS outcomes that meet the requirements of legislation, licenses, permits, TransAlta’s policies and practices and the project's Project Success Goals (PSGs) related to HSE
- Apply principles of loss management to minimize exposures to incidents and ensure all contractors apply health, safety and environmental programs meeting all legal and project permit requirements
- Collaborate and support the Project Development teams to steward projects through the Early and Mature Development Project Stages and gain senior leadership / Board of Directors approval
- Once projects achieve Final Investment Decision (FID), lead all aspects of project(s) execution through to commissioning and onto commercial operation and business integration
- Rigorously plan and manage program scope to ensure commitments are achieved safely and within agreed time, cost and quality parameters including the application of a proactive and robust change management program. This includes collaborating with project controls team members to establish cost estimates, schedules, earned value measurement, progress targets etc. required to achieve the cost and schedule commitments
- Identify and manage project risks
- Coordinate a multifunctional engineering, supply chain, and construction team, including collaboration with Human Resources team members, to resource the project. Further collaborate with internal functional group leads such as Supply Chain Management, Business Integration, Legal, etc. to manage cross functional resourcing requirements
- Ensure appropriate levels of project governance are in place and represent the project in various governance forums (gate reviews, Board of Directors meetings, Steering Committee Meetings, etc.)
- Establish appropriate project execution and contracting strategies
- Collaborate with other business units to ensure overall objectives are achieved and learnings are shared
- Drive excellence in team performance including the development and implementation of continuous improvement initiatives and processes
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:
- 15 years of relevant experience on projects with a total installed cost of $25 million or greater (representative projects include both greenfield projects as well as brownfield expansions to existing facilities)
- Proven ability to quickly earn the trust of sponsors and key stakeholders
- On site construction management and supervision experience
- Entrepreneurial spirit with a desire to participate in the transformation of the energy industry
- Capable in leading large teams, to apply complex designs, manage large construction organizations and willingness to be accountable for achieving the key project outcomes
- Ability to develop and interpret detailed technical and commercial requirements and create, implement, and manage fully integrated project-specific business processes such as the contract formation, drafting, tendering, award and management of the various contracts for equipment, materials and services
- Excellent analytical skills required for timely identification and resolution of variations to plan
- Proficient interpersonal skills and a proven ability to communicate effectively with all project stakeholders, providing important information to the right parties at the right time
- Ability to work effectively across a cross-functional team while supporting conflicting priorities and deadlines
- Believes that an ideal work environment is collaborative and encourages everyone to be curious and bring their best ideas forward
- Excellent time management, negotiation, and organizational skills, with the ability to multi-task
- Skilled problem solver and ability to adapt to the frequently changing needs of the business
- Proven knowledge and expertise in the use of project management methodologies and tools and a drive for continuous improvement
- Valid provincial driver's license and clean driving record

Annual base salary starting at USD $150,000.00. The final agreed-upon base salary is based on the successful candidate(s) qualifications and experience.
