TransAlta is currently looking to hire an full-time Accountant, Shared Accounting Services reporting directly to the Supervisor Shared Accounting Services – Gas & Renewables.


As the Accoutant, you are accountable for providing the function of operations accounting for TransAlta power generate assets. This role will focus on completing monthly accruals, accounting entries, budgeting, business reporting, and supporting the generation of the company financials assets. This position ensures that TransAlta’s financial results will be reported accurately, timely, and in compliance with all guidelines and polices.


This is a terrific opportunity for someone who is beginning their career within the accounting field and has a passion for the efficient generation and billing of invoices. This position offers advancement opportunities to grow within the broader shared accounting services team.




  • Ensuring that accruals are preformed accurately on a monthly basis

  • Generate monthly financial statements and reporting packages for operations leaders and be able to explain the results to stakeholder who do not have a strong background in Finance

  • Regular posting of monthly entries into the accounting system and preparation of supporting account reconciliations for the online tool

  • Generate additional quarterly reporting items to support the corporate team in their preparation and presentation of the company’s financial results

  • Preparation, reconciliation, and reporting of the business units lease related to IFRS 16

  • Participate in the annual budgeting process by supporting the fleet in the generating, analyzing, reviewing, submitting, and presenting their budget.

  • Perform functions related to Joint Venture accounting for both operated and non-operated assets

  • Support the annual Audit process by responding to inquires from both internal and external auditors

  • Preform duties in compliance with IFRS, USGAAP, SOX, and the company’s financial polices

  • Preform variance analysis and explanation of financial result

  • Preform ad hoc requirements as necessary




  • University degree in Accounting or Finance

  • Professional Accounting Designation (CPA, CMA, CGA, CA)

  • Proficient communication skills & able to develop effective working relationships

  • Demonstrated strong technical abilities using excel and Microsoft Products

  • Has a strong attention to detail that can be applied to all aspect of position

  • Able to develop and lead process improvement in their area of responsibility

  • Be a key resource for other for teams and staff and be able to work collaboratively to resolve issues that arise

  • Takes pride in ensuring the work is complete on time and with a high degree of accuracy

  • Desire to strive towards best practices and continuous improvements in processes

  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple completing priorities from multiple different teams

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and accountable to resolve issues & troubleshoot independently

  • Work independently and as a team player, providing backup, support and take on additional responsibilities to contribute to the overall success of the Shared Accounting Services department



  • Working knowledge of SAP is considered an asset
