ABOUT THE ROLE

 

We’re looking for a Commercial Business Advisor, Transmission Assets who will provide end-to-end business ownership of TransAlta’s regulated transmission business while also managing selected commercial contracts and strategic asset files.

Reporting to the Commercial Manager, this role will oversee TransAlta’s transmission business as an integrated operation, including vendor management, annual and long-term planning, budgets, forecasts, project controls, invoicing, regulatory support and cross-functional execution. The role will also manage commercial files with similar requirements, including reclamation, salvage and legacy asset agreements.

This is a great opportunity for someone with strong financial and business acumen who wants to run a portfolio within the framework of a broader organization and learn the commercial and regulatory aspects of the energy business.

This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE

 

In this role, you’ll be accountable for the business performance, coordination and commercial oversight of assigned portfolios. Your day will include:

  • Business Oversight & Financial Management
    • Own the day-to-day business relationships and lead the portfolio approach for TransAlta’s regulated transmission assets which are on First Nation lands and operated and maintained by AltaLink.
    • Oversee annual and long-term O&M, capital, reclamation and salvage plans, ensuring priorities, resources, schedules and performance expectations are clear.
    • Manage budgets, forecasts, variance analysis, capital tracking, expenditure approvals, purchase orders, invoicing and financial reporting for the business.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership & Execution
    • Coordinate Finance, Accounting, Regulatory, Legal, Indigenous Relations, project management and other internal teams to deliver on commitments.
    • Provide concise reporting to leadership, including financial performance, priorities, risks, decisions and required actions.
  • Regulatory, Indigenous Relations & Compliance Oversight
    • Work with TransAlta’s regulatory and legal teams to prepare our General Tariff Application, respond to information requests, justify cost recoveries, and advance other regulatory or compliance matters.
    • Coordinate with AltaLink, Indigenous Relations, Regulatory and Legal teams to support access, permitting, work planning and stakeholder engagement activities.
    • Maintain records, approvals, permits and supporting documentation to satisfy regulatory obligations.
  • Commercial & Contract Management
    • Own selected commercial contracts, counterparty relationships and strategic asset files.
    • Interpret contractual obligations, monitor performance, manage amendments and renewals, and develop strategies to resolve commercial issues or disputes.
    • Develop business cases and commercial recommendations that balance cost, risk, compliance and long-term value.
    • Lead or support negotiations and work with internal stakeholders and external counterparties to implement agreed outcomes.

 

ABOUT YOU

 

  • You want to run a portfolio like it’s your own business – the relationships, the numbers, the contracts, and the outcomes.
  • Post-secondary education in finance, accounting, business, economics, engineering or related discipline.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience in budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, cost control, capital tracking, invoicing and financial reporting.
  • Experience overseeing a portfolio, capital projects, project controls or similar cross-functional business activities.
  • Ability to interpret contracts and financial information, assess business impacts, and develop practical recommendations.
  • Strong relationship and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to coordinate and influence across teams.
  • Sound judgment and an execution mindset, with the ability to prioritize work, make decisions, drive accountability and resolve issues.
  • Awareness of Indigenous relations and a respectful approach to supporting work involving First Nations.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, analytical and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to travel approximately 10 times per year within approximately four hours of Calgary, Alberta. Timing and duration of travel is flexible.
