The Data Architect position is accountable to provide technical and operational guidance on the design, creation, deployment and management of TransAlta's data architecture. This position will work closely with team members and business partners to plan, develop and deliver innovative data solutions across the organization while promoting effective data management practices.




  • Design and build modern, cloud-based data systems that will meet TransAlta's complex and fast-evolving data requirements.
  • Contribute to data initiatives as a technical resource by providing design considerations, cost estimates and identifying best practices.
  • Work closely with business partners, business analysts, data integration developers & data scientists to deliver high-performance, data driven solutions.
  • Provide technical expertise on industry trends, seeking opportunities to leverage new technologies to provide business value through data.
  • Ensure that data users and consumers use data responsibly through executing data governance and compliance initiatives.
  • Participate in and facilitate the resolution of operational issues in a time-sensitive manner.
  • Perform peer code reviews as required.




  • Bachelor's degree or master's degree in computer science, software engineering or related quantitative field.
  • 5+ years of work experience in data management disciplines including data integration and data modeling.
  • 3+ years of work experience in cross-functional teams and collaborating with business stakeholders in industrial setting in support of data management and analytics initiatives.
  • Experienced programmer with a good understanding of software design patterns and principles and ability to apply them within a cloud environment.
  • Demonstrated capability to identify and resolve technical, operational, and organizational problems.
  • Capability to develop and communicate complex project plans to stakeholders at all levels of an organization.
  • Working knowledge in any of the following areas is considered an asset:
    • General scripting & programming languages (SQL, C#, Python, Java, Scala, Javascript)
    • Databases (SQL Server, Azure Time Series Insights, NoSQL databases, Azure Cosmos DB, Redis)
    • Data warehousing (Azure SQL Data Warehouse, Apache Hive)
    • Data virtualization (Denodo)
    • SAP solution architecture (CRM, ECC, SAP BW)
    • Process historians (Aspen Tech IP21)
    • Telemetry and messaging platforms (Azure Event Hubs, Apache Kafka)
    • Data flow and integration tools (Azure Data Factory v2, Apache Nifi, Azure Functions, Azure Logic Apps, BizTalk Server)
    • Cloud storage (Azure Blob Storage, Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2)
    • Big data tools (Apache Spark, Databricks, Apache Hadoop)
    • Containerization (Docker, Azure Kubernetes Service)
    • Data science tools (scikit-learn, R, Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch)
