ABOUT THE ROLE

 

Through Analytics, Automation, and Applications the Innovation & Data team partners closely with our Generation, Corporate, and Trading teams to reinvent the way TransAlta works. We are currently seeking a Software Developer for our head office in Calgary.  This is a one-year contract position.  As the Software Developer, you'll be part of a team responsible for support of existing Trading and Asset Optimization applications, and the full software development lifecycle as we modernize these legacy tools into a custom responsive web application.


ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

  • Work with our Trading and Asset Optimization customers, developers, and data professionals to distill problems into right-size solutions.
  • Support break-fixes of existing tools which include Java 6, Java8, .net and Python
  • Working on development to modernize existing applications
  • Complete development and maintenance in our React/NodeJS responsive web application and other innovative solutions as required
  • Grow our application infrastructure and processes as our projects evolve.
  • Contribute to initiatives as a technical resource by providing design considerations, cost estimates and identifying best practices

 

ABOUT YOU

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or in related areas, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of software development experience.
  • Experience with the technologies in our stack:
    • Java 6
    • Java 8
    • .net
    • SQL Server
    • Python
    • React (Hooks) / Material UI Frontend
    • Mixed Apollo GraphQL & Express REST NodeJS API Layer
    • Azure DevOps CI/CD
    • Azure Hosting
  • Nimble and able to pivot as our understanding of the business needs changes.
  • Motivated to take a pragmatic look at each problem and consider unconventional solutions.
  • Able to deliver incremental, iterative value and collaborate frequently.
  • An understanding of effective agile and software development practices.
  • Good communication skills and ability to translate business requirements to technical solutions
  • Knowledge or familiarity in any of the following areas is considered an asset:
    • Power generation, energy trading, electricity, or natural gas markets
    • Data Bricks
    • Azure Data Factory
    • Data science and advanced analytics
    • C#
    • Neo4j
    • PostgresSQL
    • Kubernetes
    • Apache Spark
    • Telemetry and messaging platforms
