ABOUT THE ROLE

As we continue to grow and evolve in the dynamic energy sector, we are seeking a highly skilled and visionary Lead Engineer, Controls and Operational Technology to join our team.
The Lead Engineer, Controls and Operational Technology, will be responsible for shaping and driving the Controls and OT system strategy at TransAlta. This role will serve as a subject matter expert to stakeholders in TransAlta’s generation plants and control centers, working to optimize the performance, reliability, and efficiency of our electricity generation operations. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a passion for innovation.
This is full-time salaried position, based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Asset Management Plan: Oversee the implementation of a comprehensive asset management plan for Controls and OT systems aligned with TransAlta's business objectives and growth plans.
- Technology Implementation: Serve as a subject matter expert in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of Controls, Monitoring & Diagnostics and OT systems across TransAlta’s generation plants and control centers.
- Process Optimization: Implement and improve fleetwide processes, to streamline and optimize existing operational processes at the plant and control center level.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, maintenance, IT, and regulatory compliance, to ensure seamless integration of SCADA and OT systems.
- Performance Monitoring: Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor the effectiveness and impact of SCADA and OT systems.
- Risk Management: Identify and mitigate potential risks associated with Controls and OT systems at a fleetwide level, ensuring compliance with industry standards and best practices.
- Innovation and Research: Stay abreast of emerging trends and advancements in Controls and OT systems, conducting research and pilot projects to evaluate their feasibility and potential benefits.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Professional Engineer, with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or other provincial Engineering Regulatory Association and qualifies for inter-provincial mobility
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Controls and OT systems, with a proven track record of leading technology initiatives in the energy or utilities sector
- Strong understanding of SCADA equipment and communications protocols, generation control systems, OT networking equipment and cybersecurity, and other relevant technologies
- Excellent leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a diverse stakeholder group
- Exceptional problem-solving and analytical abilities, with a strategic mindset and a focus on delivering results
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Strong knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and best practices related to operational technology in the energy sector
- Ability to travel up to 20%
