ABOUT THE ROLE

 

TransAlta is actively seeking an experienced and dynamic legal counsel to provide in-house legal advice and support to TransAlta and its subsidiaries on commercial and transactional matters to support our Commercial, Growth and Operations teams in our various operating jurisdictions. Large project and/or construction experience, as well as familiarity with the electricity sector, are also an asset.

 

TransAlta has a results-oriented, fast paced and high-energy work environment. The successful candidate will be highly self-motivated, with a proven capability to work effectively and collaboratively to provide the highest level of practical commercial and legal support. A professional, pro-active orientation, and solutions-oriented, hands-on approach are essential. Strong commercial acumen, as well as effective negotiation and drafting skills are a must. You must also be able to balance competing demands, and partner with multiple functional teams in a highly dynamic business environment.  

 

This role offers the successful candidate opportunity for significant exposure within TransAlta, as well as to collaborate, grow and take on new challenges.      

 

This role is based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

Accountable for providing legal advice and services to TransAlta on a broad range of legal matters, including:

 

  • Providing effective and practical legal support to the Commercial, Growth and/or Operations teams, as needed, to support existing relationships and explore new commercial opportunities, including drafting and negotiating commercial arrangements and agreements, including power purchase agreements, partnership and joint venture agreements, letters of intent, bids, leases, and other contracts
  • providing legal and commercial advice and support on major projects, including corresponding commercial agreements, as well as construction, procurement and related contracts
  • Advising TransAlta on the legal and commercial implications of various business initiatives and related decisions
  • Providing advice and direction on TransAlta’s corporate policies, as required; and
  • Providing additional legal services as required in consultation with the EVP Legal, VP Legal, Legal Directors/Managers

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following qualifications and experience:

 

  • Qualified to practice law in any Canadian jurisdiction
  • Four or more years of relevant experience in a top tier firm or in-house setting
  • Experience in commercial or corporate legal matters, with an emphasis on commercial transactions, including experience in effective transaction structures, negotiations and drafting
  • Experience providing legal support and advice in respect of large projects and/or construction matters is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to provide legal advice within cross functional relationships
  • A pragmatic, solutions and results-oriented mindset is a must
