Our ambition in the newly created Innovation & Technology team is to build, embed and mature a digitally enabled and data-driven culture across TransAlta. We are looking for innovative results-obsessed leader to help power our mission and lead the way to a Digital TransAlta.


The Manager, Data & Innovation is a key role in building, evolving, and enabling an enterprise-wide data and innovation strategy. This role serves as catalyst and integrator to drive complex data-driven initiatives across our businesses. You will lead delivery teams across advanced analytics, data science and modern application development to deliver solutions for our frontline generation and trading businesses. This role will combine strong understanding of innovation management and digital transformation with expertise in data engineering, data science, AI &ML, automation and cloud computing to solve real business problems.


This is a full-time employee position. 




Here is the great work that you will get to do and be responsible for: 


  • Partner with TA businesses to define and execute digital transformation strategic roadmaps

  • Change Agent: Drive cultural change, promoting and embracing a data-driven innovation culture

  • Innovation pipeline development - identify, develop, and build innovation/renovation technology portfolio across TA businesses

  • Manage delivery of the innovation roadmap to provide agreed upon deliverables for business technology optimization, and continuous improvement

  • Data Strategy - champion and develop an enterprise-wide data strategy, including a unified tools and platform roadmap

  • Accountable for leading design, implementation, and operation of a unified enterprise-wide data platform

  • Establish a modern application development platform team and lead the delivery of business transforming software and application solutions

  • Develop a digital fluency campaign to embed innovation Ideation and digital literacy

  • Drive delivery of multiple digital projects concurrently, manage project risks and adopt Lean/Agile methods (as appropriate) in an outsourced, co-sourced or in-house development environment

  • Lead proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and incubation of emerging technologies aligned with high value business opportunities

  • Develop processes for solution productization, scaling and transition to operations using modern approaches




We are looking for a digital native with proficient analytical and information technology skills: data analytics, AI/machine learning, cloud computing. Here are the must-have qualifications and experience: 


  • Entrepreneurial / Start-up spirit with creative & strategic thinking skills

  • Thorough understanding of the business innovation processes and design thinking, emerging technology landscape and technical solutioning interdependencies

  • Able to lead the planning, organization and facilitation of executive-level digital planning workshops and the ability to leverage emerging technologies to transform business models

  • Experience driving business value opportunities and successfully scaling those opportunities and proactive approach and execution rigor with a builder's mind to create value driving technology use case opportunities

  • Outstanding communication and relationship skills, ability to engage with a broad range of stakeholders, capable of leading by influence and negotiation

  • Problem solving skills - organizational and analytical skills, and the ability to facilitate a culture that gets things done

  • Demonstrated project delivery experience and strong track record of leading organization-wide transformation programs

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in digital and technology focused roles preferably in software development and deployment

  • Technical fluency and strong working knowledge of hybrid cloud-based data platform development, data integration, data architecture, and governance and modern application development.

  • Master’s degree in information technology or related fields (computer science; information science; software engineering; digital technology innovation), a degree in Engineering (general engineering; mechanical engineering; electronic and electrical engineering) with additional IT qualifications

  • Experience in DevOps and Continuous Integration/Delivery methodologies and tools


Here are some nice-to-haves for this role: 


  • Some work experience in at large industrial companies will be advantageous 

  • Experience working in energy or other industrial sector a definite plus
