ABOUT THE role

Our Energy Marketing & Trading team is seeking a driven and highly experienced Manager to lead our Natural Gas trading desk.

 

The Manager, Gas Trading, leads all aspects of the gas trading desk and reports the VP & Head Trader. The role is accountable for planning the business, delivering on strategic and financial goals and ensuring effective people management and resourcing within the desk. 

 

This is a full-time salaried position based at our head office in downtown Calgary on the Trade floor. Please note that this position is ineligible for remote work.  We are open to hiring candidates from the US, with relocation support available.  This is a Calgary based role.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

  • Develop, implement, and review a 1–2-year business plan to drive proprietary trading results and achieve strategic objectives
  • Identify and capitalize on growth opportunities within trading parameters, including geographic expansion and new product offerings
  • Collaborate with the Customer Solutions team to expand TransAlta’s natural gas customer business
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team by selecting, mentoring, and establishing clear accountabilities for direct reports to ensure the delivery of agreed-upon outcomes
  • Maintain a comprehensive trading plan for individual traders and the broader team, encompassing financial targets, products, tenors, and risk management measures
  • Offer strategic leadership to the natural gas trading team to support TransAlta’s growth and development business, including market intelligence sharing, trade idea generation, market pricing, and customer engagement
  • Ensure the desk has strong fundamental analytics and modeling capabilities across all traded markets
  • Oversee accurate reporting of trading positions, market pricing, and related processes
  • Implement strategies to optimize asset management, maximizing gross margin and the value of TransAlta’s energy assets while adhering to risk, safety, and compliance guidelines
  • Work closely with power trading teams to provide insights and strategic advice on natural gas markets
  • Identify and mitigate enterprise risks within the trading function
  • Operate within the prescribed limits and risk framework established by the Managing Director, Risk
  • Manage and strengthen relationships with existing customers, including TransAlta-owned and third-party assets (e.g., Saranac Facility) for which we procure fuel.
  • Drive customer growth by effectively operationalizing customer agreements (e.g., EMAs)

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

  • Bachelor's degree in business, economics or mathematics
  • Minimum of 5 years of trading experience
  • Familiar with balancing physical points, gas scheduling, LNG, constraints, and market fundamentals
  • Optimizing pipeline and storage assets effectively
  • Leading a team of traders, analysts and schedulers
  • Building on our Alberta AECO market expertise
  • Demonstration of risk management skills
  • Evaluating fundamental market drivers to create a trading view
  • Plan trade execution discipline around price, information, and capital allocation
  • Remove emotion from decision making by having a trade management plan
  • Rigorous analysis of market components and expectations
