ABOUT THE ROLE

 

TransAlta is seeking a Supply Chain Manager to lead procurement and materials management operations across Canada and the U.S.  This role is based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

 

This working manager role requires balancing team leadership with direct ownership of strategic initiatives and operational responsibilities.  The role is responsible for overseeing procurement, strategic sourcing, contracting, material planning, and supplier relationship management to ensure seamless execution of TransAlta’s supply chain operations. This includes developing and implementing procurement strategies, managing supplier performance, optimizing inventory, and mitigating supply chain risks.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

  • Lead a team of 15 supply chain professionals across Canada and the U.S. with minimal supervision
  • Act as a hands-on leader, balancing team leadership with ownership of strategic initiatives and operational responsibilities
  • Oversee the full supplier lifecycle, from strategic sourcing and contract negotiations to performance management and supplier relationship development
  • Develop and implement procurement strategies to achieve savings and reduce Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
  • Oversee bid processes, including tendering, evaluation, negotiation, award, and contract formation, post-award contracts management, including change management, claims resolution, and compliance monitoring
  • Determine optimal compensation strategies (e.g., Lump Sum, T&M) for various project delivery methods
  • Lead negotiation and settlement of claims and disputes, ensuring contractual obligations are met
  • Oversee material planning, purchasing, expediting to ensure seamless execution
  • Develop and oversee Materials Management Plans that align with projects execution strategies
  • Work with Operations to optimize inventory levels, reducing costs while ensuring availability
  • Identify and mitigate supply chain risks, including commercial, contractual, and supplier risks
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment between procurement and business objectives
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, including the Modern Slavery Act, corporate governance policies, and safety standards
  • Recruit, develop, and manage team members, ensuring optimal resource allocation and team structure
  • Foster a high-performance culture through leadership, coaching, and mentorship
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across supply chain functions, optimizing processes and performance

 

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

  • 15+ years of supply chain management (SCM) experience, including 5+ years in leadership roles
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field
  • Strong knowledge of materials management, including material planning, inventory optimization, and logistics
  • Expertise in procurement, strategic sourcing, contracting, including competitive bid processes
  • Strong analytical, and project management skills to drive data-informed decision-making
  • Proven negotiation skills, with a strong understanding of contract law, competitive bidding, and contract formation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels, including leadership, field employees, vendors, and contractors
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and SAP
