The position of Project Manager / Planner is accountable to apply best practice processes and standards for project: planning, execution and completion to the organizing and controlling of large capital construction projects.   Projects are managed to meet the key performance indicators of scope, cost, and schedule as well as other key performance indicators identified mutually with the stakeholders. The position is accountable to oversee the activities relating to completing the project work ensuring excellent safety performance by all.  As the primary owners’ representative, the position ensures all the business case objectives are met including performance and life cycle operating and maintenance costs. 




Including, but not limited to:

  • Building and leading a multi-discipline project team to complete Engineering and Construction activities to meet project objectives
  • Ensuring safety and environmental performance standards are paramount at all times within TransAlta’s policies, procedures, standards and collective agreements
  • Manage project financials, Quality Assurance & Control and schedule compliance
  • Procuring and managing detailed engineering and design, creation of work packages, procurement of materials and construction of facilities in accordance with local laws, good engineering design practices and corporate policies
  • Assessment, evaluation and resolution of technical issues that may arise during project detailed design, construction and commissioning stages
  • Planning work requests for accurate job package creation, as per work management standards
  • Producing up to 3-month deliverables in alignment with immediate manager business plan and delivering agreed results
  • Planning and scheduling of Non-Turnaround Capital Projects
  • Confirmation of BOM for Equipment
  • Coordination of activities with stakeholders such as SCM, Operations or Engineering
  • Working with Project Controls and Engineering to ensure all data is properly captured and project is properly closed out
  • Managing work priorities to balance long and short-term goals
  • Managing capital projects including contractor and employee oversight
  • Clearly communicate task assignments and performance expectations to team members and conduct regular team meetings




  • Degree and professional designation in engineering (P. Eng.) mechanical, chemical or, electrical and/ or PMP designation is an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering and project management experience, having worked on gas fired generation projects for power generation and/or utility companies
  • Experienced in managing and leading projects or programs $1M - $30M.
  • Advanced skills in Primavera, MS Projects, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and SAP
  • Strong technical background with an understanding of the principles of project management, scheduling and planning
  • Demonstrated leadership
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
