TransAlta is currently looking to hire a full time Real Time Trader, East, reporting directly to the Supervisor, Short Term Trading.  This position is core to the East RealTime desk which requires working shift work with an on-call obligation.  This role is accountable to manage our Generation Assets in the Eastern markets (Canada & USA) which provides a service and mitigates risk through diligent work habits and compliance.




  • Manage Eastern Asset offers, outages and first contact 24/7 with the ISO’s and RTO’s
  • Adminster Energy Management Agreements (EMA’s) where we provide 24/7 support
  • Manage relationships with new and existing Trading and EMA customers
  • Deliver financials results as per annual East Short Term Trader plan
  • Create growth opportunities with new customers or in markets where we trade (IESO, NYISO, PJM, MISO, ISNE and SPP)
  • Support the entire East desk with all power scheduling and deal management requests
  • Work with cross functional teams (Risk, Settlement and Credit groups) to resolve all trade or financial discrepancies related to the Eastern business
  • Accountable for all personal trade execution and accurate deal capture




  • Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics or Computer Science
  • 5+ years related market and trading experience
  • Ability to process information and make decisions in a timely fashion
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with counterparts and customers
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively make educated decisions under pressure
  • Successful candidates will be required to work 11 and 8 hour shifts (7:00 am & 5:30 am starts) with additional on-call support.  Shift schedule will consist of 4 days on and 4 days off (subject to change)
  • This position requires the following pre-hire actions: employment reference and verification checks, criminal record checks, security checks and FERC checks
