ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is currently looking for a dedicated & motivated Commodity Risk Analyst to join our Commodity Risk Management team. You will work closely with Front Office traders and draw on your experience, initiative, energy, and analytical skills to understand, analyze, stress test and report on all aspects of exposures for defined commodities, regions, and trade desk strategies.

 

This is a full-time position located at our Head Office in Downtown Calgary.

 

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

As the Risk Analyst, Commodities, you will:

  • Monitor and analyze commodity trading positions, exposures, and P&L trends
  • Interpret and explain key drivers behind risk and performance metrics
  • Build and enhance models for Value at Risk (VaR) and stress testing using statistical and fundamental approaches
  • Analyze and model complex structured deals—including valuation and risk metrics
  • Help design tools and dashboards to monitor exposures, limits, and KPIs
  • Contribute to the development of quantitative tools and automation for risk workflows

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU           

 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:

 

  • 2–5 years of experience in commodity markets or related financial domains (bonus if you’ve worked with linear/non-linear derivatives)
  • A degree in a quantitative or technical field such as Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science
  • Solid programming skills—Python, R, or MATLAB preferred
  • Experience with SQL, spreadsheets, and/or BI tools like Power BI or Tableau
  • A strong foundation in probability, statistics, and quantitative modeling
  • Familiarity with stress testing frameworks, Monte Carlo simulations, or scenario analysis
  • Knowledge of electricity, natural gas, and emissions markets is a strong plus
  • You’re a self-starter who can take initiative, own projects, and drive them forward with minimal direction
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex models into actionable insights
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative, fast-paced, and evolving environment

 

Nice to haves

 

  • Interest in or progress toward the CFA Program
  • Experience working in a fast-paced trading, analytics, or risk management environment
  • You’ve built or contributed to internal tools or risk models before
  • You enjoy working across disciplines with traders, data scientists, and software developers
