Summary:

An exciting and challenging role within TransAlta for a risk professional to lead risk analysis and monitoring for defined regions and trading desk strategies.  Reporting to the Manager of Analytics and Oversight, and working closely with Front Office traders, you will draw on your experience, initiative, energy, and analytical skills to understand, analyze, stress test and report on all aspects of exposures associated with a portfolio of trade strategies.

 

Accountabilities:

• Monitor, analyze, and explain power commodity trading positions, exposures, P&L trends and variances

• Monitor and report exposures against limits (internal, policy and external) and key performance indicators

• Perform statistical and fundamental based stress testing on individual strategies, trade desk and trade floor portfolios

• Develop and maintain risk models for Value at Risk and stress testing; and

• Model and analyze complex structured deals (i.e., valuation and risk metrics).

 

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of experience with commodity markets, market dynamics (i.e., technical and fundamental analysis), and linear / non-linear traded instruments

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in one of Finance, Economics, Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or Physics

• Knowledge of power, natural gas, and emissions markets would be an asset

• Experience with Energy Trading and Risk Management systems (ETRMS) would be an asset

• Proficient in stress testing, quantitative modelling and analysis techniques for structured deal valuation, including Monte Carlo and fundamentals based modelling

• Strong Excel (spreadsheet) and database skills.  Proficiency with Matlab, Python, and/or ‘R’ would be an asset  

• Strong attention to detail and time management

• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic team environment, including working in a respectful and constructive manner with Front, Middle, and Back offices.
