ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Advisor, Marketing and Communications role at TransAlta offers a dynamic opportunity to elevate our brand through website management and compelling external communications. The ideal candidate for this role is a strong communicator with a mix of website management, marketing acumen and stakeholder relationship skills. They should have an entrepreneurial, can-do mindset, a keen design sense and the ability to translate complex business strategies into clear, compelling and visually engaging communications.
This role reports to the Manager of Brand & Marketing and collaborates closely with internal business stakeholders, IT, external vendors and marketing agencies to drive business growth and brand affinity. A strong marketing eye is essential—this person must ensure all materials are well-written, visually appealing and aligned with TransAlta’s brand and corporate narrative. The ability to work with ambiguity or change and be able to drive for results is key.
TransAlta’s business is not a Business-to-Consumer or even a traditional Business-to-Business model – we provide tailored complex solutions that meet the diverse needs of our customers to provide their power generation needs. If you are a creative, curious and detail-oriented professional who can merge design, messaging and marketing strategy to deliver high-impact communications then this role is for you. This is a hands-on role with a mix of strategic elements and tactical execution, as you will be building and implementing new marketing and communications foundations for the business.
This is full-time salaried position, located at our head office in Downtown Calgary with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Website Management

Implement website strategy and manage content, ensuring it aligns with TransAlta’s brand, corporate narrative and value proposition, and is up to date and accurate

Develop and implement comprehensive web strategies to enhance the user experience and user interface design, drive traffic and communicate business strategy, in collaboration with our website support vendor

Oversee website governance, working closely with internal business stakeholders and ensuring adherence to best practices and compliance with legal, regulatory and accessibility standards

Implement website updates, troubleshoot issues, and optimize site performance, at times in collaboration with IT and external vendors

Leverage web analytics to monitor and optimize site performance, user journeys and engagement, providing regular reports and insights to inform digital strategy

Manage SEO strategies to improve search engine rankings and visibility
External Communications and Marketing

Partner with business stakeholders such as Origination and Growth to develop, write and execute external communications and marketing materials that drive growth and brand awareness within key target markets in Canada, US and Australia

Ensure all marketing and communication materials maintain brand consistency, high quality messaging and strong visual presentation, and enable the organization to consistently follow brand guidelines

Support conference strategy and sponsorships, including developing marketing collateral (printed, video, etc) and organizing branded materials

Support social media strategy, in collaboration with Corporate Communications team members

Partner with external agency to provide creative direction and oversight to ensure marketing and communication materials meet brand, design and messaging standards
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
-
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Business, New Media Production and Design, Web Design or a related field

6-8 years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably within the utilities and energy sector

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear and compelling messages

Experience in website management, including governance, Content Management Systems, user experience and user interface design, with a proven track record of delivering intuitive and user-centric solutions

Experience with design applications such as Canva and InDesign to create compelling one-pagers, brochures, presentations and other marketing collateral

Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and take initiative to drive for results

Excellent customer service skills and strong integrity relative to computer security and confidentiality of information

Strong analytical skills to measure and improve marketing performance and experience with analytics tools such as Google Analytics

Proficient in Microsoft Office, including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel

- Proficient in HTML and JavaScript would be an asset
