TransAlta is currently looking to hire a full time Senior Gas Trader.  Reporting to the Manager,Gas Trading, this role is accountable for identifying areas of growth and using specialized knowledge and experience to support the Gas desk in meeting P&L targets.  This position trades gas and grows the physical business through acquisition of pipeline and storage contracts.  This role also provides mentorship and guidance to more junior members of the team.



  • Accountable for providing specialized gas knowledge and experience to grow the gas trading desk by growing the physical gas business with acquisition of pipeline and storage contracts
  • Accountable for investigating and implementing new trading strategies in the physical and financial gas trading markets within the established risk parameters and VaR allocation
  • Accountable for hedging assets and proprietary trading with futures and derivatives
  • Accountable for providing gas market intelligence to the broader trading group
  • Accountable for utilizing existing networks and establishing new trading relationships
  • Accountable for optimizing existing and future asset requirements and energy management agreements




  • Bachelor degree preferably in business, economics or mathematics
  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience trading physical natural gas
  • Strong relationships with utilities, gas marketers and pipeline operators
  • A track record of innovation, strategic thinking and profitability are a requirement
  • Demonstrated ability to with balancing physical points, gas scheduling, LNG, constraints, and market fundamentals
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team is critical
  • Strong communication skills and be a self-starter who works independently
  • Ability to make quick decisions based on information available
