ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Manager, Investment Analysis, the Senior Investment Analyst will play a critical role in evaluating and managing investments in the power generation and utilities sector. This role involves detailed financial modeling, market analysis, and strategic planning to support investment decisions and maximize returns. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to assess investment opportunities, monitor portfolio performance, and contribute to the overall strategy of the organization.
This role is primarily office based at our head office in Downtown Calgary.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Develop, maintain, and refine complex financial models to evaluate potential investment opportunities, including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and greenfield projects
- Analyze financial statements, cash flow projections, and other financial data to support investment decisions
- Conduct in-depth market research and analysis on the power generation and utilities sector, including trends, regulatory impacts, and competitive landscape
- Evaluate macroeconomic factors and their potential impact on investment opportunities
- Assist in the development and execution of the company’s investment strategy, aligning with corporate goals and risk appetite
- Identify and recommend new investment opportunities in renewable energy, traditional power generation, and other utility-related assets
- Monitor and report on the performance of existing investments, including financial performance, operational efficiency, and market positioning
- Provide recommendations for portfolio optimization, including divestitures, reinvestments, and strategic partnerships
- Lead and participate in due diligence processes, including financial, operational, and legal reviews of potential investment opportunities
- Prepare and present detailed investment analysis and recommendations to senior management, investment committees, and other stakeholders
- Communicate complex financial information clearly and concisely to non-financial stakeholders
- Assess and mitigate risks associated with investment opportunities, including market, credit, and operational risks
- Develop and implement risk management frameworks and strategies
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, or a related field. MBA, CFA, or similar advanced certifications preferred.
- 4 to 7 years of experience in investment analysis, financial modeling, or related roles
- Prior experience in investment banking, corporate finance, equity research or other valuation-driven roles
- Accounting knowledge would also be an asset
- Prior experience working in the power industry, power generation, or energy sector
- Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, Excel, and financial analysis tools. Familiarity with industry-specific software and databases.
- Solid understanding of the power generation and utilities sector, including regulatory environments, market trends, and key players.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information and make data-driven decisions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present to and influence senior management.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
