ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting new opportunity for a Senior/Project Engineer at TransAlta. In this position you will play a critical role in the delivery of TransAlta's Centralia Coal to Gas (CTG) project, one of our key strategic growth initiatives. Working closely with the Project Manager and Engineering Manager, you will provide technical leadership, oversee engineering and procurement contractors, and help drive project execution from FEED through detailed design to commissioning and start-up.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with field or discipline engineering experience who is ready to move into a Project Engineer role, or for an experienced Project Engineer seeking their next challenge. You will play a key role in the successful delivery of a large-scale capital project, working alongside multidisciplinary teams, suppliers, contractors, regulators and operations stakeholders from project development through to commissioning and start-up.

The position is based in Calgary, with travel to the U.S. project site and supplier facilities required throughout all project phases.

  • Support the execution of a major capital project by overseeing engineering, procurement and supplier activities from design through construction and commissioning.
  • Act as a key liaison between contractors, suppliers, project teams and internal stakeholders to ensure alignment on scope, schedule, quality and project objectives.
  • Participate in design reviews, technical studies, constructability assessments, HAZOPs, HAZIDs and other project development activities to ensure safe and reliable project outcomes.
  • Monitor contractor and supplier performance, identify risks, resolve technical issues and remove barriers that could impact project delivery.
  • Provide input into project schedules, cost estimates, change management activities and stage-gate deliverables.
  • Support construction, commissioning and start-up activities by coordinating technical responses, troubleshooting issues and facilitating equipment handover to operations.
  • Drive effective interface management across engineering disciplines, supplier packages, construction teams and operational stakeholders.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by ensuring all project activities are executed with a Safety First mindset and in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.

ABOUT YOU

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta.
  • 8-12 years of progressively responsible engineering experience, including significant involvement in large capital projects within power generation, oil & gas, energy or petrochemical industries.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in field or discipline engineering position with a desire to step into a Project Engineer role
  • Demonstrated experience representing an owner's team on large, complex projects with multiple internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of project execution, engineering management, contractor oversight, procurement and construction support activities.
  • Proven ability to manage technical scope, evaluate change requests, resolve complex issues and support successful project delivery.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across diverse teams.
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements within Alberta and Canada; U.S. project experience is considered an asset.
  • A collaborative leader who embraces accountability, sound engineering judgement and a One Team approach to achieving project success.
