ABOUT THE ROLE
Our Energy Marketing & Trading team is excited to welcome two enthusiastic and driven summer students ready to gain exceptional hands-on experience on TransAlta's dynamic trade floor. This high-performing team specializes in trading and scheduling power and natural gas across North America, leveraging proprietary trades to generate margins that drive value for TransAlta. As a summer student, you will work directly with the front-line trading and marketing group, gaining invaluable exposure to the fast-paced energy markets. This role is a full-time temporary 4 month position with an ideal start date of early May 2026. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a University program to be considered.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Assist with analytical and modeling tasks that support the trading, analytics, and marketing teams, helping contribute to day‑to‑day trading goals.
- Support ongoing trading and risk‑related projects by completing ad hoc analysis, helping build simple business cases, and preparing clear, easy‑to‑understand presentation materials.
- Work with large data sets to help identify trends, spot opportunities, and share insights with trade floor teams.
- Collaborate with analysts and traders to build a strong understanding of energy markets, customers, trading points, and team strategies.
ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following essential qualifications and experience:
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program with a focus in an analytical discipline such as economics, finance, engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, or computer science
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Experience with MATLAB, Python, or other programming languages or power flow modelling software
- Excellent problem-solving skills with a keen analytical mindset
- Self-motivated and results-oriented, with a proactive approach to work
- Proven ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, strong initiative, and a commitment to learning
- Superior written and verbal communication skills
- Able to thrive both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team
- Eager to learn and understand TransAlta’s business operations
