ABOUT THE ROLE

 

TransAlta is seeking a Short-Term Trader, East, to join our team and report directly to the Manager, East Cash & FTR Trading. This pivotal role on the East Short-Term desk involves shift work with on-call responsibilities and is essential to managing our generation assets in Eastern markets (Canada & USA). The position focuses on delivering reliable service and risk mitigation through diligent work practices and strict adherence to compliance standards.

 

This position is a full-time in-office role at our new head office in Downtown Calgary.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

  • Responsible for managing Eastern Asset offers, outages, and 24/7 first contact with ISOs and RTOs;
  • Oversee Energy Management Agreements (EMAs) to provide around-the-clock support;
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with both new and existing trading and EMA clients;
  • Drive financial results in alignment with the annual East Short Term Trader plan;
  • Identify and pursue growth opportunities with new clients and in active trading markets (IESO, NYISO, PJM, MISO, ISNE, and SPP);
  • Provide comprehensive support to the East desk, handling power scheduling and managing deal requests;
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Risk, Settlement, and Credit) to resolve trade or financial discrepancies for the Eastern business;
  • Execute personal trades and ensure accurate deal capture.

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Engineering, Economics, Mathematics, or Computer Science;
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in market and trading environments;
  • Strong ability to quickly analyze information and make timely decisions;
  • Proven skill in communicating effectively with counterparts and customers;
  • Demonstrated capacity to make well-informed decisions under pressure;
  • Successful candidates must be able to work 11- and 8-hour shifts (starting between 7:00 am and 6:00 am), with additional on-call support as needed;
    • The shift schedule follows a 4 days on / 4 days off rotation (subject to change).
