Summary

 

The Environmental Specialist advises and coordinates environmental compliance activities for TransAlta’s Coal and Mining business to ensure that environmental data and reporting is conducted in accordance with all applicable environmental laws and regulations, company policies and procedures, and industry best practice.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain knowledge of applicable regulations, conduct regulatory assessments, and provide regulatory interpretations and guidance
  • Assist with the development and execution of implementation strategies for environmental emission policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Responsible for developing and maintaining tools for tracking emission related environmental compliance for coal and mining facilities
  • Act as primary contact for government agencies, external auditors and commercial partners with a focus on emissions calculation, documentation and reporting, including supporting verification and audits
  • Develop, review, and maintain records required to demonstrate compliance with environmental requirements with a focus on emissions tracking
  • Responsible for working with business groups on review and submittal of emissions inventories
  • Accountable for regulatory compliance including Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA), Specified Gas Reporting Regulations (SGRR) and National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting at provincial and federal levels
     

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or an advanced degree in environmental science, engineering or a related technical field and a minimum of three to five years of related environmental experience
  • Familiarity with federal and provincial environmental air regulations and codes
  • Advanced mathematical, science, and analytical abilities
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Access, SharePoint, Word, PowerPoint, other database systems, etc.)
  • Effective and well developed written and oral communication skills, coordination and planning skills
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills
  • Proven ability to conduct complex calculations and analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • Ability to act in a timely fashion based on sound information
