Join the SunHills Mining team at the Highvale Mine, Canada's largest surface strip coal mine managed and operated by SunHills Mining Limited Partnership (LP), a TransAlta entity.  The Highvale Mine is located about 70 km west of Edmonton near Lake Wabamun and fuels three coal-fired power plants operated by TransAlta.

 

SunHills Mining LP is currently seeking to fill the position of Engineer, Mine Planning.

 

Reporting directly to the Supervisor, Engineering, the incumbent is responsible for providing Engineering, administrative services and technical expertise pertaining to designing of pits, cost estimates, and equipment selection in accordance with overall company objectives in an economical, safe and environmentally responsible manner within the statutory requirements of the Mine's Regulations, Environmental Regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Responsible to ensure that all engineering activities must be conducted in an ethical cost-effective and responsible manner consistent with government regulations, and internal policies and procedutes. Ensures that all Engineering support is planned in coordination with other departments and executed in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner, to maximize effectiveness. All departmental activities are to be conducted within the framework of Company policies, procedures and values.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

 

Responsibilites include a wide range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Develop the annual plan with respect to coal quality, recoveries and inventory, and reclamation.
  • Assist in the daily / weekly mine plan.
  • Equipment selection and hours.
  • Provide on the job instruction and training to Engineers in Training, Engineers & Mine Technologists.
  • Assist in the formation of annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Assist in the development and revision of short range mine plan.
  • Develop and implement various training programs to provide development and improve the expertise of those employees who report directly to this position.
  • Assist in the quarterly plan with respect to coal quality, recoveries, seam mineability and inventory, and reclamation.
  • Assist in pit plans within MineSight and AutoCad to create volumes for overburden, topsoil.
  • Assist in the production of Government submissions and annual reports.
  • Participate in special project assignments as requested by the site Engineering Manager.
  • Assist in the Highvale Long range planning.
  • Tours mine workings on a regular basis to examine and discuss execution of the daily, weekly and monthly plans with Mine Operations.
  • Ensures design, planning, and field activities reflect the needed concern for production, productivity, and cost control.
  • Provides technical assistance to Mine Operations in the areas of wall stability, blast design, dump stability, and coal recovery/quality subsoil, parting, interburden and coal.

 

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Ideally the incumbent should have a degree in Mine Engineering with 3-5 years related experience.
  • Registered with APEGA.
  • Experience in mining and managing mining assets.
  • Draglines, electrical and hydraulic shovels, trucks, dozers.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience in reliability, planning, scheduling and project management.
