ABOUT THE ROLE
The Project Manager, West is responsible for ensuring projects are completed in a safe and efficient manner through the application of project management procedures and processes. As the Project Manager you will be the key accountable party for defining, planning, executing, and closing a given project or initiative. This role will work collaboratively across TransAlta’s generation business to ensure business outcomes are achieved with a clearly articulated scope and quantifiable business benefit.
This role is base out of our office in Keephills, Alberta but this person could be assigned projects at any of TransAlta’s Canadian gas generation sites.
This is a full-time, safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Ensure that projects are planned and executed in compliance with TransAlta health & safety standards.
- Ensure all regulatory and compliance requirements for the project’s execution are met.
- Ensure the owner's and/or contractor's work is compliant with TransAlta standards.
- Manage work to minimize exposure to rework claims and extras.
- Ensure that the TransAlta staff and/or contractors work is facilitated to ensure that safety, schedule, and cost targets are achieved.
- Plan and execute projects in adherence to the TransAlta project processes.
- Ensure timely financial forecasts and project status reports are communicated to all applicable stakeholders.
- Monitor and assess the performance of your project, through regularly scheduled project reviews including EH&S, updates on plan progress, budget to forecast estimates, risk and opportunities, scope changes and schedule changes.
- Manage TransAlta staff and/or contractors in relation to safety, contract provisions, work progress and quality to ensure the project is completed on or ahead of schedule.
- Develop a collaborative working environment with peers, stakeholders, and support groups to ensure project issues are resolved in a professional and productive manner.
- Support and facilitate scope development for projects.
- Coach team members on project management best practices.

- Safety – Drives safety performance through active participation in the review of safe work practices of the employees and contractors and provides immediate coaching to correct unsafe work practices and behaviours. Sets a leadership example for safety performance and expectations.
- Communication Skills – Structures and conveys ideas and information, both verbally and in writing, in a way that brings about understanding, commitment and results. Works to lead a team taking all opinions into account, being transparent, reporting on and/or escalating issues or incidents quickly and effectively
- Maintaining Direction – Monitors progress towards a goal and adjusts when necessary. Reviews project cost, schedule, safety, quality etc. targets to gauge current project success criteria and commits to course changes as required.
- Leadership – Implement tools, templates and processes that are leading change in TransAlta project management and work execution. Provide constructive feedback and take a continuous improvement strategy to better these for the organization. Gains support, commitment, and action towards the organization’s goals, displays consistent leadership behavior (leads with integrity, empathy and honesty). Is an active part of the overall leadership team at TransAlta.
- Solid estimating abilities and experience.
- Strong technical knowledge.
ABOUT YOU
- Engineering degree, technical diploma or trade certificate
- Minimum 5 years’ project management experience
- Experience in gas-fired generation projects, plant turnarounds and/or utility companies considered a strong asset
- Sound understanding of mechanical, electrical and information management systems that comprise energy facilities
- Strong people management skills to motivate others and produce measurable results
- Project Management certification from PMI or another recognized industry association is a strong asset
- Strong communications skills, both oral and written
- Excellent organizational skills
- Advanced skills in Primavera, MS Project, Microsoft Office, and SAP
