TransAlta owns and operates the Keephills and Sundance power plants. The Shift Supervisor is responsible for leading an Operating crew in the the safe, efficient and reliable operation of the assigned Plant (Keephills or Sundance) while on shift. The Operations group is responsible for providing 24 X 7 oversight of the plant, working closely with the Maintenance and Engineering groups to identify and mitigate risks to safety, environmental performance, availability, reliability and cost. In the off hours, the Shift Supervisor is the only TransAlta Management representative on site and is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely notification and escalation of issues to appropriate Business Unit and Leadership personnel.




  • Manage employees, equipment, and work conditions to ensure employees work safe and in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • Ensure pressure equipment is operated in accordance with Safety Codes Act and Regulations, and established Operational Standards and Procedures.
  • Ensure the plant delivers the requirements of our customers.
  • Monitor key plant operational parameters and ensure ASE’s / CRO’s / Ops initiate appropriate responses to changes in unit performance.
  • Ensure emergency preparedness of the crew through planning, training, and preparation for emergency operations.
  • Communicate appropriate information to all stakeholders including other Shift Supervisors, Operations personnel, Maintenance and Engineering personnel, and Plant Management.
  • Manage staffing issues within the functional team, including daily supervision, recruitment, employee performance, and interpretation and application of the collective agreement.
  • Manage operator training through tracking of compliance and progression training progress, setting of training priorities, identifying training gaps, and ensuring trainees are actively engaged in progression training.
  • Set shift priorities and providing input on day to day and longer term operations and maintenance priorities.
  • Report and investigate all safety, environmental, and production incidents including identification of causes and recommendations to prevent recurrence.
  • Assist ASE’s and operators with troubleshooting of equipment and ensure work notifications are entered for identified equipment problems.
  • Ensure employees adhere to Corporate and ABT policies and procedures, operational standards, safe work planning process, and maintenance strategies.
  • Manage administrative duties [e.g. meetings, reports, time cards, expenses, email, etc.] to ensure these activities support the employees and their work in a timely, relevant, and safe manner.




  • Alberta Second Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency.
  • People leader with 8+ years of progressive experience in a function; may possess an undergraduate degree, diploma or equivalent experience
  • Understanding and application of procedures and concepts within own discipline and basic knowledge of other disciplines
  • Understand and apply the policies, procedures, regulatory requirements and the collective bargaining agreement
  • Change management principles and practices
  • Comprehensive and detailed plant operational knowledge
  • Understand Emergency Response Plan and enact when appropriate
  • General knowledge of maintenance practices and standards
  • Basic financial knowledge to manage assigned areas of the budget
