ABOUT THE ROLE
We have an exciting new opportunity to join our Scotford Cogeneration team as a Maintenance and Operations Manager.
Reporting to the Station Manager, the Maintenance and Operations Manager supports the continuous, efficient and safe day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Scotford Cogeneration station. This position will make decisions on maintenance and operating regimes, including developing and updating standard Operating procedures and safe work practices as well as support of change management. This is a line position requiring well-developed technical and people-management skills, and the ability to build and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including Joint Venture (JV) partners.
This position is located at the Scotford Cogeneration Plant, just East of Fort Saskatchewan. The Scotford Cogeneration Plant is a 195-megawatt natural gas-fired cogeneration plant that meets the thermal and power needs of the Shell Scotford Upgrader Complex.
This is a full-time salaried position and is also considered a safety sensitive role. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Ensure that safety is imparted as the top priority in all aspects of the work and in the day-to-day operations and maintenance activities and that all staff (including contractors) understand and fulfill their health, safety, and environmental responsibilities
- Support and if required lead investigations for all HSE and compliance near-misses and incidents to determine root cause and preventative measure to prevent reoccurrence
- Monitor and ensure processes are in place to address AESO/NERC rules and ARS compliance
- Ensure facility maintenance and operations are prioritized, scheduled, and executed in accordance with the station and JV Day to day and Major Maintenance requirements.
- Through the Production Specialist, oversee the day-to-day functions of the Cogen plant to meet production and cost targets safely
- Oversee maintenance and engineering support to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the facility
- Support the Performance and Condition Monitoring activities and cycle chemistry on behalf of the Cogen and put in place measures to optimize where appropriate
- Support the outage event planning and execution in conjunction with TransAlta staff and Shell Turnaround, Major Maintenance, Running Maintenance, or Special Projects Group as appropriate
- Participate in the development of the annual station business plan and manage budgeted expenditures Developing maintenance plan and life cycle planning with the Station Manager
- Mentor personnel including operations, engineering, maintenance and technical groups. Ensure issues and work arising is addressed and maintain a productive and cooperative relationship with the JV Production Specialist and the Upgrader Production Manager.
- Support the recruitment, Orientation and Onboarding of TransAlta staff as required
- Provide input into Performance Management of TransAlta staff
- Develop and ensure adherence to O&M budgets for the facility and oversee the development of long-term capital plans with the input from operations, maintenance, and engineering teams
ABOUT YOU
- Possess a First Class Power Engineer’s Certificate of Competency
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering and registration, or eligible for registration, with The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) as a Professional Engineer may be considered in lieu of this
- 10 years’ heavy industry experience including progressively responsible roles in planning and organizing of work force activities or projects. Preference is for experience in cogeneration/power generation facility working with gas, turbines, HRSG’s, or large steam generation equipment.
- Proven track record in industrial plant operation and project management would be an asset
- A minimum of 10 years of this experience in a senior operating or supervisory role.
- Strong leadership skills and experience in mentoring and developing staff, strong written and verbal communication, problem-solving and interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer-focus and service
