ABOUT THE ROLE 

 

TransAlta has an exciting new opportunity to join our Joffre Cogeneration team as an Engineering Supervisor.

 

The Engineering Supervisor leads a multi-discipline engineering team tasked with executing capital and expense projects, leading major maintenance activities, and supporting the Operations and Maintenance departments.

Reporting to the Manager, Gas, Engineering & Projects, the Engineering Supervisor leads a team responsible for all aspects of project development, design, implementation, and closure in compliance with the TransAlta PPMP and MOC processes. The engineering team also provides consistent, comprehensive, and professional support to the station operations and maintenance departments in areas such as troubleshooting, root cause analysis, maintenance practices, outage planning & execution, operating guidelines, and engineering standards development and implementation.

This is a full-time salaried position and is also considered a safety sensitive role. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.

 

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO  

 

Engineering Team Leadership

  • Lead team recruitment, development, and succession planning activities.
  • Execute goal setting and performance activities to support individual development and station objectives.
  • Ensure adherence to TransAlta’s Professional Practice Management Plan and Management of Change process.
  • Delegate responsibilities and support the management/execution of studies, projects, and maintenance initiatives.
  • Act as a liaison between the engineering team and maintenance, operations, and station management.
  • Develop the annual engineering business plan and long-range budget forecasts.
  • Set and adjust team priorities with the support of the management team.
  • Ensure adherence to station budgets and that unplanned expenditures are identified and approved.
  • Participate in and/or lead station audits.
  • Approve department expenditures, expense reports, timesheets, and vacation.

 

Operations and Maintenance Support

  • Develop and oversee predictive and preventive maintenance programs.
  • Prepare and/or review technical reports, ensuring accuracy and identifying trends.
  • Develop and implement strategies for reliable operation of site equipment.
  • Provide technical recommendations on station equipment, operations, and maintenance.
  • Lead and/or support troubleshooting efforts and major maintenance activities.
  • Manage the work of independent consultants and support staff.

 

Regulatory and Joint Venture Compliance

  • Assign and support the Metering Committee Lead and Integrity Coordinator.
  • Provide technical support for Joint Venture agreements.
  • Ensure engineering adherence to regulatory compliance policies and procedures.
  • Oversee safety codes compliance.

 

Health, Safety & Environment

  • Promote a culture of safety leadership.
  • Ensure team adherence to training requirements and safe work processes.
  • Ensure incidents are reported, investigated, and follow-up actions are completed.
  • Ensure resources, materials, and training are available to the engineering team.

 

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU  

 

To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following essential qualifications and experience:

 

  • Engineering degree from a recognized post-secondary institution and registered as a Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA, or meet the requirements of the APEGA Inter-Provincial Mobility program.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant industry experience in power generation, or a comparable industry.
  • Proven leadership and project management experience.
  • Technical knowledge of the combined cycle power generation process and equipment.
  • Working knowledge of power generation industry organizations, standards, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated understanding, and the ability to apply applicable Acts, Regulations, and Codes.
  • Ability to lead and execute in a dynamic work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Desire to seek feedback to improve quality of deliverables and to develop existing and new expertise.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and cloud-based business applications.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
