Reporting to the Hydro Asset Manager, Hydro the successful applicant will lead and coordinate activities related to Environmental legislation, policies, practices and programs across Hydro. The purpose of this position is to be a lead and provide support, advice, and oversight to ensure environmental and emergency response management plans are in place and adhered to across Hydro operations. This role supports Hydro Operations with compliance reporting, regulatory applications, training, and audit functions. A main focus of the Senior Environmental Specialist will be the interaction with government, consultants and communities with the focus on Environmental compliance and due diligence.




Delivering all environmental permitting; including acquiring new permits/licenses, renewals or amendments as necessary for TransAlta’s Hydro operations.

  • Maintaining strong relationships and information exchange with local, provincial and federal regulators to ensure TransAlta’s business plans are consistent with regulatory requirements
  • Planning, developing and supervising consultants in monitoring, evaluating and reporting baseline environmental conditions and environmental impacts.  This will also include managing consultant time and budgets and reviewing technical reports
  • Identifying, assessing and disseminating information on environmental regulatory changes, ensuring environmental regulatory changes affecting operations are addressed and providing guidance on how the project must fit within current acts, regulations and authorizations
  • Coordinating regulatory activities with Hydro operations and engineering groups, including facilitating regular project planning and tracking meetings
  • Working closely with TransAlta’s Public Consultation and Aboriginal Consultation teams to provide project information and representation at public meetings and open houses
  • Provide expertise on regulatory compliance matters to ensure operations are in compliance with all regulatory authorizations
  • Provides ongoing advice to management regarding specific environmental issues, equipment and practices
  • Carries out environmental audits and inspections as required
  • Data evaluation, program audits, standards development and developing
  • Recommendations to optimize performance of reporting requirements will also be within the scope of this role




The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • At least five years’ experience as an environmental professional (EP designation preferred)
  • B.Sc. in Environmental Sciences or equivalent
  • Experience working in Hydro is an asset, including having a strong understanding of pertinent environmental legislation, regulations, approvals, permits and licenses that guide the operations.
  • Ability to work with diverse individuals in multi-stakeholder situations
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated skill in project management, negotiation and strategic planning
  • Strives for continuous improvement and to deliver outcomes in the most efficient and effective manner
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Desire to learn new skills and gain diverse competencies
