ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is currently seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join our team in Kingston, Ontario.

In this role, you will be responsible for performing and coordinating daily mechanical and maintenance activities to ensure safe and efficient operations. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Millwright certification, and an Operating Engineer certificate is considered an asset. Candidates who do not possess both certifications will be required to enroll in a company-sponsored five-year apprenticeship program.

This is a full-time, salaried, safety-sensitive role based out of Kingston, ON. This is a safety-sensitive position. Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment.

 

A DAY IN THE LIFE

  • Perform, plan and coordinate power plant maintenance in accordance with laws, regulations, and best practices
  • Works closely with shift operators to ensure high standards of communication
  • If qualified, work as assistant day shift operator when required and assist with plant start ups and shutdowns 
  • Works with other staff to ensure that health, safety and environmental systems are maintained and managed. This includes safe work plans, as well as the safe isolation of equipment and systems to perform maintenance work.
  • Takes an active role in plant training and development, procedure and systems development and management, as well as other project related activities
  • Key contributor to plant availability and performance targets
  • Point of contact for site mechanical contractors
  • Able to manage work orders in SAP and create Purchase Requisitions
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of the plant systems and developments
  • Updates training material as changes to the plant systems are made
  • Takes an active role in first aid, emergency response situations, health and safety and environmental incidents
  • The successful person will be expected to participate in the incident management system and near miss program, reporting incidents in Synergi.

 

ABOUT YOU

  • Millwright certificate preferred 
  • Minimum 4th class Power (Operating) Engineer certification. Willing to consider applicants' workings towards 4th class or willing to complete.
  • Two (2) years experience in a power generation facility or large integrated process plant
  • Experience working on gas or steam turbines an asset
  • Demonstrated problem-analysis and problem-solving expertise
  • Proficient computer skills and experience with SAP is an asset
  • Committed to safety orientation
  • Excellent organization, communication, and time management skills
  • Passion for learning and training other team members 
  • Capable of working under pressure 
  • Ability to work safely and comfortably both independently and in a team setting
  • Good troubleshooting skills
