ABOUT THE ROLE
We are currently seeking an OMT (Operations & Maintenance Technician) Shift Engineer, 2nd Class, to join our Ottawa team!
This is a full-time, safety-sensitive position based out of Ottawa, Ontario, and requires the ability to work both 8-hour and 12-hour shifts. Preference will be given to candidates who hold an Electrical or Millwright certification. Successful candidates without dual tickets will be required to complete a company-paid 5-year apprenticeship program. All terms and conditions are covered under the Power Workers’ Union.
As this is a safety-sensitive position, successful candidates will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Operations and monitoring of all plant systems consistent with requirements of the Technical Standards and Safety Act
- Works closely with shift partners to ensure high standards of communication and plant operating procedures so that policies are maintained
- Works with other staff to ensure that health, safety, and environmental systems are maintained and managed; this includes safe work plans, as well as the safe isolation of equipment and systems to perform maintenance work.
- Takes an active role in plant training and development, procedure and systems development and management, as well as other project-related activities
- Performs routine water tests on a regular basis and understands water chemistry, water, and waste management operations
- Troubleshoots all plant systems to ensure optimal operations and task corrective action when required. Submits job requests on systems that require maintenance work.
- Maintains the units within all applicable guidelines and regulations, including emissions, efficiency, heat rate, capacity, and safety
- Maintains a complete set of logs that includes all information on normal operating parameters and detailed information on upset conditions
- Competently starts up and shuts down in both normal and upset conditions
- Performs routine preventative maintenance checks on various plant systems and equipment. Performs minor maintenance work on shift when required
- Maintains a thorough knowledge of the plant systems and developments. Updates training material as changes to the plant systems are made
- Takes an active role in first aid emergency response situations regarding fire, health and safety, and environmental incidents
- The successful person will be expected to participate in the incident management system and near-miss program, reporting incidents in the ILP database
ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:
- Minimum requirement 2nd Class Operating Engineers certificate
- A Millwright or I&E ticket is a preferred
- Five years experience as an Operator in a power generation facility or large integrated process plant
- Experience working on gas or steam turbines an asset
- Problem-analysis and problem-solving expertise
- Proficient computer skills, experience with SAP an asset
- Committed to ensuring a strong safety culture
- Excellent organization, communication, and time management skills
- Ability to learn and train others
- Tolerance for high-stress situations
- Ability to work safely and comfortably both independently and in a team setting
- Experience in dealing with a dispatchable plant and dealing with the IESO
- Good troubleshooting skills
