Development Engineer

 

TransAlta operates and maintains 6 Power Stations in Western Australia. With a 20+ year history in the State, we provide a reliable power supply to large industrial customers and have invested significantly in stable, long-term contracted assets.

 

As part of our corporate initiative to grow the business, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Development Engineer to join our Perth-based business development team. Reporting to the Business Development Manager you will be accountable for conceptual design of new gas, renewable or hybrid power plants across Australia and the technical evaluation of the technical evaluation of power plant acquisitions. This role requires researching technological, environmental and social changes that impact the ownership and development of electrical generation facilities.

 

Accountabilities include:

 

  • Developing optimum economic and technical power plant configurations to meet TransAlta and customer requirements.
  • Complete life cycle cost analysis of project alternatives including: Class 5 and 4 capital, O&M, site selection, performance and schedule estimates which are accurate, achievable and have appropriate justification and due diligence
  • Writing technical portions of customer proposals, and Requests for Proposals.
  • Assist with power supply, thermal energy and gas contract strategy and support contract negotiations as well as the environmental permitting process.
  • Maintain customer, partner and supplier relationships.
  • Due diligence for potential acquisitions: reviewing construction risks, capital and operating estimates, and operational and performance data, outage reports and contracts to generate the long-term costs, performance and condition based risk

 

Knowledge and Technical skills required:

 

  • Mechanical, electrical or chemical Engineering Degree and professional designation (P. Eng.)
  • Minimum 5 years of engineering and project experience, having worked on projects for power generation and/or utility companies
  • Exceptional analytical skills using spreadsheets and plant performance evaluation, MS Project, Excel, PowerPoint and Word
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of gas-fired and/or renewable power plant processes and their impact on plant performance
  • Knowledgeable in many technologies including fossil fuel based plants and all types of renewables and battery storage technologies
  • Knowledgeable about key technical and process steps for grid-interconnection
  • Contract review and negotiation competence.
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting project requirements
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required for presentations, report writing and proposal writing. This includes the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons
  • Basic understanding of electricity marketing and the impact of plant operations on marketing efforts
