ABOUT THE ROLE 

 

TransAlta owns and operates and maintains 6 Power Stations in Western Australia. With a 25-year history in the State, we provide safe, clean and reliable power to large mining and industrial customers and have invested significantly in stable, long-term contracts. TransAlta is entering an exciting phase in our Australian business as we expand with our customers and develop multiple renewable projects within Western Australia. 

 

The Senior Engineer Renewable Energy Projects is a key member of the Australian Growth team accountable for engineering assessment and development of wind, solar, and other renewable energy projects.

 

WHAT YOU WILL DO 

 

As the Senior Engineer Renewable Energy Projects, you would be responsible for but not limited to:                                                                                                                                    

  • Development of optimum economic and technical renewable generation plant configurations to meet TransAlta and customer requirements
  • Researching and keeping current with technological, environmental, and social changes that impact the ownership and development of renewable energy facilities.
  • Prepare preliminary Design Basis Memorandum, Principal Project Requirement Specifications and or Functional Specifications for use by EPC(M) contractors and to provide technical support to the Project Manager.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to projects in design, construction, commissioning and testing while assisting the EPC / EPCM develop a detailed Design Basis Memorandum
  • Review potential sites for future Greenfield and brownfield development; considering transmission, resource, permitting constraints and to provide inputs and documentation for site control, permitting and regulatory activities including: maps, locations for resource monitoring, facility conceptual layouts and designs for Class 5 production estimates and loss calculations
  • Provide value-adding engineering support to internal and external stakeholders as required
  • Identify issues and conflicts, remove barriers, resolve issues and conflicts involving stakeholders and escalate to appropriate level when required.

 

ABOUT YOU  

 

Our Senior Engineer Renewable Energy Projects, must meet or exceed the following qualifications and experience:  

  • Tertiary qualifications in an engineering discipline (Renewable Energy, Mechanical or Electrical)
  • Past engineering experience, in the development and construction of:
      • wind (minimum 5 years’ experience essential)
      • solar
      • battery energy storage projects
  • Sound knowledge of industry standard wind and solar resource assessment software and industry best practice in design of wind and solar generation assets
  • Demonstrated practical knowledge of wind, solar and / or battery energy storage plant equipment performance
  • Understanding of O&M requirements for renewable power generation facilities and how these impact costs to operate these assets and the overall return on investment of capital
  • Strong statistical background, fundamentals and understanding of industry guidelines for resource, errors and trends in industry.
  • Sound understanding of third-party expertise and techniques for resource analysis
  • Exceptional analytical skills using spreadsheets and plant performance evaluation software, processes, and programs to manipulate large amounts of data and develop tools and procedures for data quality assurance
  • Strong understanding of project finance and key technical inputs to modelling costs to develop, build and operate.
  • Expert in specialized software for wind flow modelling and solar resource availability modelling
  • Advanced IT literacy with Microsoft office applications and planning tools such as Microsoft Project or Primavera P7.
  • Detailed understanding of power systems and networks and the tools required to ensure technical compliance to network technical rules and constraints.
  • Detailed understanding of techniques and equipment required to mitigate network technical constraints such as Static VAR compensation, Harmonic Filtering and Synchronous condensers.
  • Detailed understanding of the connection application process for the WEM, NEM and islanded power systems.
  • Expertise in conducting contract review and negotiation
  • Ability to improvise and deliver innovative solutions in the face of conflicting and adverse project requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required for presentations, report writing and proposal writing. This includes the ability to express technical concepts to laypersons.
