ABOUT THE ROLE

 

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineer, specializing in Development to join our Growth team in our Perth office. Reporting directly to the Group Manager – Projects, as the Sr. Engineer – Development you are a critical single point accountability for the conceptual engineering of new opportunities, potential acquisitions and the detailed development of new power generation and transmission facilities on existing TransAlta sites in Australia.

 

You are required to understand existing and emerging technologies, as well as lead technical innovation to meet financial, environmental, and social challenges that impact the development and ownership of power systems.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

 

  • Develop optimum economic and technical system configurations, designs and solutions to meet TransAlta and customer requirements
  • Complete life cycle cost of technology and configuration alternatives, including risk assessment, site optimization and site comparisons
  • Prepare capital cost estimates of Classes 2-5, including O&M, capital cost estimates, O&M, performance, and schedule estimates
  • Prepare preliminary Basis of Design or Functional Specifications for use by consultants and contractors Provide technical leadership and guidance to projects in design, construction, commissioning, and testing stages
  • Support development, negotiation, and management of contracts for Engineering, Procurement, Construction (EPC) and Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) contracts
  • Develop scoping briefs to work with engineering consultants to ensure they deliver the agreed upon services in line with preapproved contracts and project requirements
  • Maintain current knowledge of technological, environmental, and social changes effecting power systems.
  • Assist managers with comprehensive research designed to support the development and maintenance of the corporate growth strategy and allow for competitor analyses
  • Develop and write technical portions of customer proposals
  • Assist with power supply, renewable and thermal energy and gas contracting strategies and support contract negotiations as well as environmental permitting processes
  • Build and maintaining key relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and regulators
  • Provide technical due diligence for potential acquisitions involving facilities completed, under construction or in development

 

 

WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU

 

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Minimum 10 years of engineering experience, having worked in engineering and/or design of electricity generation, transmission, or distribution projects
  • Good understanding of Technical Rules in the NEM / WEM and well-developed understanding of the market rules in the NEM and WEM and the impact of plant operations on marketing efforts
  • Proficient understanding of industry guidelines for resources, errors, and trends in industry
  • Proven understanding of power system static and dynamic analysis in order to identify technical risks and design appropriate mitigations
  • Exceptional analytical skills using spreadsheets and plant performance evaluation software, processes, and programs to ensure data quality assurance
  • Experience developing relationships with industry participants such as governments, regulators, end-users, network operators, generators, contractors, and suppliers
  • Contract review and negotiation expertise
  • Experience and knowledge of renewable energy projects power systems including conventional and renewable energy projects, together with network infrastructure, including lines, substations and switchboards
  • Experience and knowledge of power system controls and integration, including off-grid and hybrid power systems
  • Experience and knowledge of the mining industry

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

 

  • As required, travel to sites throughout Australia
  • Valid Police clearance (within the last 6 months)
  • Permanent work rights in Australia
  • COVID vaccination
