The key accountabilities for this position include:

  • Ensure safe and reliable operation of the plant by application of Engineering principles, practices and technical standards.
  • Provide technical support to daily operations and maintenance activities.
  • Provide expertise to keep compliance with the   Ontario market rules (NERC, IESO, etc.)
  • Create high level scoping documents including cost estimates and justifications for selected capital projects, and act as a resource and plant customer during design, implementation, and commissioning.
  • Produce technical scopes for large or complex overhaul, shutdown, or turnaround maintenance tasks for the electrical equipment: Generator, HV and LV systems, UPS, Auxiliaries, and BOP.
  • Supply technical support during maintenance overhauls of gas turbines, steam turbines, boilers, and other large equipment. Document engineering requests during the outage and create outage reports for future reference.
  • Identify opportunities for plant productivity, reliability, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Optimize equipment performance and costs through improved maintenance operating procedures and design improvements following on site management of change standards.
  • Develop and review maintenance standards and procedures/scopes while ensuring compliance to plant vendor and industry codes and standards particularly as related to pressure equipment.
  • Review designs of new proposed facilities or alterations to existing equipment to identify risks to performance that are inherent in the design concept using analytical tools such as HAZOP, RCFA, TapRoot.
  • Provide a leadership role in identifying root causes of failure and provide sound solutions to equipment deficiencies.
  • Provide problem definitions and scoping studies on deficiencies recommending solutions through upgrades, redesign, revised operating or maintenance procedures
  • Coordinate engineering changes and ensure they are effectively integrated into existing systems per Management of Change guidelines.
  • Ensure the consistent application of TransAlta’s design standards, processes and equipment guidelines.

 

Work with Operations, Maintenance, Plant engineering and Engineering contractors to provide and be responsible for the following electrical distribution expertise and support:

  • Knowledgeable with NERC and IESO and ESA compliance requirements (System Impact Assessments, Equipment Registration, ESA Planned Reviews and other documents and procedures) 
  • Knowledgeable on LV, MV, HV Electrical Distribution Systems in general; Protection, Specifying, Designing, Grounding, Code Compliance, Commissioning, Testing, Operating
  • Able to Run Electrical Fault and Load Flow and Arc Flash Studies on SKM
  • Able to create equipment isolation and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of 230KV Ring Bus Protection Circuits, Synchronizing Circuits; specifying, designing installing, commissioning, operating, blocking maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of (N6S & N7S) 230kV Transfer Trip Protection Circuits to Hydro One; specifying, designing installing, commissioning, operating, blocking maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of Relay Protection schemes for Medium Voltage Feeders, Tie Lines, Generators, Transformers, Buses; specifying, designing, installing, commissioning, operating, blocking, maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of Generators, Excitation Systems, Voltage Regulators, Synchronizing Systems; specifying, installing, commissioning, operating, maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of HV, MV, LV Switchgear, Breakers, Transformers, Cables; specifying, installing, commissioning, operating, maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of electronic SEL (or other) Relays; settings, testing, alarm and fault analysis data (waveforms, etc.) and communication to SCADA
  • Knowledge of UPS and DC Battery Charger Systems and Emergency Generator; specifying, installing, commissioning, operating, maintaining and testing
  • Knowledge of SCADA systems (and linking to SEL RTAC for communication and control).
  • Able to create Operating, Maintenance, Commissioning, Testing and Safety Procedures on LV, MV and HV Electrical Distribution System and Equipment and Protection Systems
  • Knowledgeable with Fiber Optics Communication and SCADA systems (linking to Electronic SEL (or other) Relays via RTAC for communication and control
  • Knowledgeable on safety requirements for electrical systems (arc flash and voltage boundaries, grounding, energized work procedures and other maintenance and operating procedures and equipment isolation)
  • Able to create electrical project scopes/drawings, equipment specifications, bid packages, etc. (and where required ESA Plan Review Documents, IESO System Impact Study Applications)
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Registered professional engineer (P.Eng)
  • 5+ years of Professional Engineering experience in a power plant or other industrial environment
  • Multi-disciplinary experience in different power plant areas and processes will be a definite asset.
  • Other interested candidates with different combinations of experience and qualifications will also be considered should they show the aptitude for the positions and have demonstrated experience working in a power plant or industrial environment.
