ABOUT THE ROLE
We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Safety Advisor to join our TransAlta team based in Sarnia. Reporting to the Sr. Manager, Energy Transition. As the Safety Advisor, you are responsible for ensuring that our business operations consistently meet and exceed all health, safety, regulatory requirements, industry standards, and internal safety policies and standards. This is a full-time, safety-sensitive site-based position located at our cogeneration facility in Sarnia, Ontario.
The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Assist in the rollout of corporate health and safety initiatives to TransAlta employees
- Work with the business unit to establish, maintain and test emergency response plans
- Ensure all Health and Safety incidents are managed according to established policies and standards. Including leading root cause investigations
- Proactively identify plans to reduce hazards, hazard exposures, and hazardous activities that pose a significant risk to the organization
- Ensure that safety policies, standards, and procedures are aligned with evolving regulatory requirements and adhered to at our East Gas facilities
- Provide expert advice on safety systems, trends, response actions, and interpretation of health and safety regulations
- Develop the programs and initiatives to build and sustain an industry leading safety culture that applies to both TransAlta employees and contractors, including mentoring, coaching, advising, and supporting safety inspections by local management
- Ensure activities are conducted according to area-specific Health and Safety systems
- Monitor and report on numerous health and safety metrics and key performance indicators
- Ensure major maintenance outages are conducted safely and in accordance with established turnaround safety management plans
- Ensure contractor safety plans are reviewed and acknowledged prior to work commencement
- Ensure all site safety training is up to date and meets TransAlta’s requirements and is consistent with Ontario and Michigan OH&S Act and Regulations
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
To be successful in this role, we are looking for the following must-have qualifications and experience:
Certifications
- Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent professional safety designation desirable
- Degree, diploma, or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized Post-secondary Institution, or equivalent combination of experience
- NCSO and CHSC certification
- Expertise in developing and implementing Health & Safety Management Systems
- 3-7 years of progressively responsible experience in occupational health and safety in an industrial facility or industrial construction environment
Qualifications
- Possess a broad knowledge of health and safety regulations
- Demonstrated understanding of operations safety and process safety
- Experience with contractor safety management and practices
- Experience in safety aspects related to power plant operations
- Thorough knowledge of safety theory and practice, as it relates to an industrial setting
- Confidence and ability to interact and influence workers and contractors
- Knowledge of what constitutes a strong safety culture and how to sustain and demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation
- Well-developed analytical skills
- A customer-centric mentality to support internal stakeholders; ability to build and maintain effective relationships across a diverse set of key stakeholders
- Demonstrated capability in developing, implementing, managing, and mentoring safety standards and policies
- Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate to external stakeholders as required
- Experience with incident management systems and applying incident investigation techniques
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to travel to our sites across North America as required
- Successful completion of pre-employment testing is a condition of employment
