The Highvale Mine is located about 70 km west of Edmonton near Lake Wabamun and fuels three coal-fired power plants operated by TransAlta.


SunHills Mining LP is currently seeking to fill the position of Senior Engineer – Long Range.


The Senior Engineer for long range is responsible for supporting the implementation of a “world class” engineering organization.  Reporting directly to the Strategic Engineering Manager, the incumbent is responsible for providing Engineering, administrative services and technical expertise pertaining to geologic modeling, designing of pits, cost estimates, and equipment selection in accordance with overall company objectives in an economical, safe and environmentally responsible manner within the statutory requirements of the Mines Regulations, Environmental Regulations and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Responsible to ensure that all engineering activities must be conducted in an ethical, cost-effective and responsible manner consistent with government regulations, and internal policies and procedures. Ensures that all Engineering support is planned in coordination with other departments and executed in a timely, efficient and cost effective manner, to maximize effectiveness. All departmental activities are to be conducted within the framework of Company policies, procedures and values.


Responsibilities include a wide range of activities including, but not limited to:

·         Develop geological cross sections for operations to aid in coal recovery.

·         Develop the 3-year mine/pit plan, and the 15-year mine plan with respect to  uncover coal, overburden, partying, interburden, coal quality, recoveries, inventory, and reclamation.

·         Utilize mine planning software to assist in special projects to determine volumes, recoveries, inventories and equipment selection and hours.

·         Provide on the job instruction and training to Engineers in Training to ensure scheduling and special projects are completed timely, cost effective and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mines Regulations, Environmental Regulations and Standard Policies and Procedures of the mine.

·         Assist in the formulation of annual operating and capital budgets.

·         Assist in the development and revision of short range mine plans that involves the preparation, scheduling, presentation and costs for the mine. Also involves the participation in the evaluation of other reserves in the province.

·         Participate in the selection and placement of personnel in the Technical Services Department.

·         Assist in the production of Government submissions and annual reports.

·         Participate in special project assignments as requested by the site Engineering Manager.



·         Ideally the incumbent should have a degree in Mine Engineering with 8 to 10 years related experience.

·         Registered with APEGA

·         Experience in mining and managing mining assets

·         Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills

·         Experience in reliability, planning, scheduling and project management

  • Ensuring that work accomplished is complete in all relevant aspects; avoiding lost productivity, and reducing costs due to excessive working of peripheral details.
  • Effectively utilizing the skills of subordinates to accomplish work objectives; providing a degree of supervision, support and accessibility that is tailored to the subordinate’s level of maturity and ability.
