We have something new and exciting, and we want you to be a part of it! TransAlta is expanding its Energy Marketing and Trading business to Australia. Currently, our Energy Marketing & Trading team deploys proprietary risk capital across all markets in Canada and the United States, while providing class-leading market insight for our Asset and Growth teams. 


We are currently looking to hire a Manager, Australian Trading to help build and expand our Energy Marketing & Trading business to Australia. The trade desk (office) is expected to be in Sydney, NSW, Australia.


The Manager, Energy Trading Australia will lead all trading aspects of the Australian trading desk. Reporting directly to our Vice President and Head Trader of Energy Trading and Marketing, as the Manager, Australian Trading you are accountable for delivering on the Trading Gross Margin targets, and the day-to-day tasks of the business while considering strategic and financial goals that are 1-2 years out. You will provide strategic direction to the Traders and Analysts within the Australian team and work collaboratively with other leaders and stakeholders within the Energy Marketing & Trading team to ensure the overall goals, growth targets and objectives of the Energy Trading and Marketing are met.

  • Developing, implementing, and reviewing a 1 – 2 year business plan and delivering the agreed outcomes for the Australian Desk

  • Delivering the agreed upon Trading Gross Margin targets through deploying risk capital within the approved products and tenor within the Australian Trading region

  • Providing leadership for optimal performance, by selecting, developing and managing direct reports capable of producing the agreed deliverables

  • Provides overall planning, leadership, and direction to employees by setting the context and direction, defining accountabilities, tasks, and assignments, and establishing boundaries for decision making and approvals

  • Identifying and mitigating enterprise risk associated with Australian Trading

  • Determining areas of growth within trading parameters, including geographic, time, and product growth opportunities

  • Effectively and efficiently managing customer growth through operationalization of customer deals

  • Developing new strategies related to asset management including maximizing the gross margin and value of TransAlta's energy assets while respecting risk limitations, safety, and compliance guidelines

  • Managing relationships with existing customers





The following are the must-have qualifications and experience to be successful in this role:


  • University degree - Tertiary qualification in business, engineering, commerce, mathematics or relevant numerical based discipline

  • 10 + years experience in the Energy Industry including the Australian physical electricity and gas markets

  • Registered as Trader in the NEM

  • Understanding of financial risk measures

  • Energy derivative understanding

  • Understanding of Energy Market Fundamentals, Power Asset Modeling, and Mathematical Modeling techniques

  • Ability to make decisions quickly and mitigate risks while ensuring compliance with prescribed parameter

  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of energy markets, with expert knowledge of Australian Power and Gas markets

  • Ability to identify areas of growth and develop and implement plans/actions to achieve that growth

  • Demonstrated knowledge of trading compliance requirements and ability to enforce these requirements within the team

  • Able to work collaboratively across the Energy Trading and Marketing team to meet growth targets, operationalize new commercial initiatives and find efficiencies across the teams while working within risk parameters

  • Managerial leadership skills with demonstrated capability to build trust in relationships; build, lead and develop diverse teams; coach and mentor leaders at various levels of the organisation

  • Proven ability to influence, negotiate and facilitate buy-in with a variety of stakeholders

  • Proven ability to initiate and lead adaption to change in a complex environment

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively represent our company TA in political, government, customer, and partner engagements
