ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is seeking an Electrical Engineering Intern/Co-op Student to join our Alberta Thermal team for an 8-month term, starting May 2026.
This role provides the opportunity for co-op students to commence and enhance their technical and professional careers by gaining valuable plant experience, with a wide range of functions. You will be given the opportunity to take part in projects both in and outside of their discipline, as cross-functionality is a valued trait when dealing with plant maintenance & operations.
This position is based at our Keephills Thermal Plant, situated 70 kilometers west of Edmonton, and five kilometers south of Wabamun Lake.
This is a safety-sensitive position. The successful candidate will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Participating in the investigation, troubleshooting and resolution of issues at the generating facilities.
- Supporting development of project designs, with opportunities to manage projects.
- Providing support in the development and enhancement of strategies for existing generation equipment.
- Reviewing and analyzing daily performance and reliability data and prepare and present summary reports, performance metrics reports, graphical representation and presentations, as required.
- Applying established calculation and design methods and at times develop new design techniques.
- Receiving theoretical and practical training in your field of study.
- Providing support to engineers, designers and technicians in performing calculations, data collection, root cause analysis and design.
- Working with engineering, maintenance and operations teams to resolve problems.
ABOUT YOU
- Current enrollment in a formal co-op program in Electrical Engineering at an accredited post-secondary institution and working towards a bachelor's degree in engineering.
- Strong academic performance.
- Valid Driver's license
- Prior work experience obtained through internship, coop or summer jobs is an asset.
- Strong computer skills, with advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, including Excel.
- Strong programming skills.
- Strong communication skills and ability to write technical documents.
- Possesses a results-oriented approach to work.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple work tasks.
- Demonstrates a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and take initiative and ability to build strong relationships with diverse groups.
