ABOUT THE ROLE
TransAlta is seeking four (4) Power Engineering Students to join our Alberta Thermal team for a 4-month term, starting May 2026 (start and end dates are flexible to accommodate school schedules), based out of our Keephills Thermal Plant, located 75km west of Edmonton.
This opportunity will appeal to students who are interested in gaining knowledge, experience and hands-on skills that will lead to operating careers in the electric power generating industry. The experience gained in this summer placement is recognized by ABSA as qualifying towards the Third Class firing time requirements.
These are safety-sensitive positions, and successful candidates will be required to complete pre-employment testing.
This in an IBEW Local 254 position covered by the terms of the collective agreement.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
After an initial orientation, successful applicants will work independently in one of the plant’s main areas (water treatment, ash plant, boiler operations, and/or turbine operations). Responsibilities will vary depending on the assigned area of the plant.
Key duties include:
- Monitoring and operating equipment
- Troubleshooting operational problems
- Initiating maintenance requests
- Working collaboratively with the crew to support safe and effective plant operations
The role follows a 5‑week, continuous, rotating 24‑hour shift schedule.
ABOUT YOU
To be considered for these opportunities you must possess the following qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled in a Power Engineering Technology Program and be on track to earn a Fourth Class power engineering certificate in the spring of 2026; be returning to your studies in the fall of 2026
- Possesses excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability and eagerness to learn and develop
- Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
- Demonstrated ability to work safely and effectively in a team environment
- Prior work experience in an industrial environment would be a significant asset
